A clear summer morning over the valley from the chalet: forested slopes falling to the village below, the Gruyere pre-Alps across the green valley, and a chalet's dark slate roof among the trees in the foreground.

The Chalet

Some places you book. This one, you settle into.

Chalet Le 1er has stood above Cerniat for a hundred years. In 2023 it was renovated with a light hand: modern comfort throughout, every original beam and board kept in place.

Step onto the terrace in the morning and it is all there, the pre-Alps across the valley, cowbells somewhere below, the smell of cut hay. Nathalie and Jean-François host it themselves. Expect a full pantry, a warm welcome, and wild-raspberry jam they make by hand.

The long table set by candlelight, glass pendant lamps glowing above and the valley windows beyond. A bed dressed in white cotton and florals, a lamp glowing beside the balcony doors at dusk. A velvet armchair and a vintage telephone in a pine-panelled corner, the valley framed in the window. The table set for fondue beside a window full of snow.
A few quiet corners of the chalet.
A wide summer view from the chalet over the green valley: meadows and forest falling to a village with its church steeple, the Gruyere pre-Alps ranged across the horizon under a bright sky, the chalet's own slate roof among the trees at the lower right.

The Spaces

Room by room, made for six.

The open living and dining room under a ceiling of fairy lights, a soft blue sofa, the long table set for six, and the balcony doors framing the valley beyond.

Living & Dining

Room to gather

The heart of the chalet is one warm, open room: a soft corner to sink into, a long wooden table set for six, and the balcony doors just beyond. Wood panelling on every wall, warmth for the cold evenings, and the valley framed in each window.

The chalet kitchen: cream cabinets, a dark stone counter, an oven and hob, a copper kettle, herbs and cutting boards against pine walls.

The Kitchen

A pantry that thinks of everything

Guests write home about this kitchen. Oil, vinegar, salt and spices already on the shelf, herbal teas gathered by hand, a proper oven and hob, a good coffee machine, and the copper kettle for the view. Cook a full dinner, or just boil water for tea.

A double bed made up in white cotton linens with a floral cushion, warm morning light through a linen curtain.

Three BedroomsSleeps Six

Soft beds under old beams

Three bedrooms sleep up to six. Two hold a double bed each, dressed in cotton linens with extra pillows and blankets close by; the third has a sofa bed for two more. Lace at the windows, a reading lamp within reach, and the hills right there when you wake.

A round dark basin set on a solid wood counter with a wooden tray of essentials, seen from above.

The Bathroom

One bath, all new

The 2023 renovation put in a clean, tactile bathroom: a round basin on solid wood, a heated rail for towels, hot water whenever you want it. Shampoo, soap and the essentials are stocked, so you can pack light.

The Gruyere pre-Alps on the horizon in the haze of a summer morning, the sun flaring above the ridge, a village settled on the green slopes across the valley.

Balcony & Terrace

Two ways to face the mountains

A balcony off the living room, a terrace in the garden, both turned toward the pre-Alps. Coffee at sunrise, the grill going at dusk, and a long quiet evening watching the light move down the ridge.

The century-old chalet on its own green plot, lawn and terrace wrapping the house, the pre-Alps beyond.

The Garden

A patch of your own

The whole garden is yours. Free parking at the door and a shelter for bikes.

Good to knowHonest notes before you book

  • No air conditioning. At a thousand metres, mountain nights stay cool on their own.
  • Low ceilings in places. If you are over 1.80m, mind your head on the old beams.
  • No dryer. There is a washer and a drying rack instead.
  • Best for ages twelve and up. The stairs and the heater (hot to the touch in winter) suit older children and adults better than small ones.
  • Not suited to reduced mobility. The chalet is built into the slope, with steps inside and out.

The Region

Gruyère, and everything around it.

Twenty minutes from a castle, an hour from Lake Geneva,
thirty seconds from the trailhead and five minutes from the pistes.

Hours and prices were checked in July 2026 and shift with the season. The links go to the official pages.

The last sun of the day breaking through storm cloud to gild the forested pre-Alps above the valley, a lone farmhouse on the slope below.
